Monday 7 November 2011 13:01 OnTranslation at the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) Autumn meeting
We have just returned from the 33rd EMWA Conference held in London and hosted by the Holiday Inn London Kensington Forum. The conference took place from November 3rd to 4th and focused on training with a choice of 24 different workshops from the EMWA Professional Development Programme. It has set the floor for in-depth discussions on drug development issues, medical communication, medical science, language and writing, professional skills and more.
A gathering of medical writers of interest to people working in areas outside of, but overlapping with, medical writing – translators, medical publishers, outcomes and clinical researchers, to name but a few. The conference featured a number of sessions and workshops in reflection of the global reality of medical writing industry today.
At this occasion’s conference, we focused on manuscript writing and in depth editing, both representing a hot-button issue in the industry as of late. These workshops opened the floor for debate, specially on the question of how far a translator and a medical writer should get involved in the research study being addressed when dealing with a medical manuscript to be translated or edited for a potential client.
We enjoyed the conference and the hands-on experience workshops very much and look forward to next Cyprus meeting!
Tuesday 18 October 2011 16:05 OnTranslation at the Valencia ProZ Conference
We have just returned from the ProZ Valencia Conference that took place from October 15th to 16th and focused on the all over knowledge background a translator needs to have! A gathering of freelance translators and interpreters working with different language combinations and within different specialization domains. The conference featured a number of talks in reflection of the global reality of translation today: subtitling and related open source software, translation assisted tools, videogames localization, professional use of social networks, among others. We enjoyed the conference very much and we won’t miss next ProZ meeting! Monday 21 March 2011 18:05 OnTranslation with Terminillo in Sprint!
On 27th March 2011, at the Cinque Confini resort, on Mount Terminillo (Rieti, Italy) a free-technique cross-country skiing race will be held. The format chosen is that of the Sprint, which will grant a spectacular race. OnTranslation is delighted to have an active role within the organization of this event, by supplying technical “cross-country ski race” customized hats (made of Lycra and Control+ with inside front part in polypropylene and a wind-stopper hidden protection with optimal moisture transportation) that will be given by lot to athletes. We would like this activity to be the first of a long series, given the commitment and engagement OnTranslation puts on sports in general, and, particularly, on translating sports related documentation. We wish good luck to all athletes and may the best man win!!! Friday 14 January 2011 18:07 New Spanish orthography: how does language change? The i griega becomes ye, the b becomes be (and not b larga or b alta); ch and ll are excluded from the alphabet; the accent on solo and the demonstrative pronouns (este, esta…) is removed and also the one between numbers (5 o 6) and quorum becomes cuórum while Qatar becomes Catar. The new edition of the “Orthography of the Spanish language” of the Real Academia Spagnola, that will be published before Christmas, tries to be, as its coordinator stated, Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez, “reasoned and comprehensive but simple and legible”. And, most of all, “coherent” with the customs of the different speakers and with grammar rules. For this reason, the academic reminds that it presents innovations and updates compared to the previous edition of 1999, but it is not, “in any terms” revolutionary.
The new orthographical rules will not affect new translation projects unless the client chooses to adhere to these new regulations. Obviously, the translator in charge of the project will advice, on a single project basis, whether it is appropriate to follow these rules or not. Nevertheless, particular attention will be needed when translating historical texts needing to transpose an source text in a target text embedded with a particular historical context. Even if we are dealing with a text from 2005, if keeping the historical character of the text is relevant, these new orthographical guidelines mark a point in time. Friday 07 January 2011 18:07 Nuts, friends, tricams, hexes and slings: tongue-twister or technical translation? We add “sports” to our expertise fields! At first sight, a sports translation may seem easier that other kind of translations but, when analyzing it in detail, we observe extreme technicity. It is of the utmost importance to have the appropriate know-how on the sport we are dealing with in order to be able to fully understand the source and verse it into a target text: specific characteristics, rules, materials and places. Only expert translators can deal with this type of translations fully guaranteeing an adequate terminology use.
Monday, 29 November 2010 10:05 Thanks to the ProZ network, OnTranslation collaborators organize a Powwow at Alicante, Spain! A Powwow is a gathering of North America's Native people. The word derives from the Narragansett word powwow, meaning "spiritual leader" but the term is also nowadays used to describe a social get-together meeting.
The workplace platform supported by ProZ, gives the possibility to its members of organizing this kind of informal meetings where the exchange of ideas of people who work on the field of translation is a source of growth for everyone. Laura C. Collada, one of OnTranslation collaborators, has recently (12/11/2010) organized a powwow at Alicante, Spain where six freelance translators, with different language combinations and fields of expertise, attended.
The meeting was an ideal occasion to exchange ideas and experiences. We would like to thank ProZ for providing this tool that allows translators, in an easy and efficient way, to organize this type of events.
Friday, 18 June 2010 10:05 Occupational therapy: proofreading! We are most pleased to welcome on our team an Occupational Therapy expert who will be responsible of Italian proofreading! Occupational therapy is a rehabilitation discipline. As defined by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, “the primary goal of the occupational therapist is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. They achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation." Scientific literature as well as conference talks or standard practice documents are characterized by technical and specialized vocabulary, which is not always easy to under stand to those unfamiliar with this field. Indeed, we are proud about the new collaboration with our team of an expert in this field, who, having a great experience in occupational therapy will be responsible of proofreading all our translations to Italian. Through this collaboration our medical translation team will, once more, guarantee high quality of our final texts.
